All about……hedgehog highways
Hedgehogs travel around one mile every night through our parks and gardens in their quest to find enough food and a mate. If you have an enclosed garden you might be getting in the way of their plans. We now know that one of the main reasons why hedgehogs are declining in Britain is because our fences and walls are becoming more and more secure, reducing the amount of land available to them.
We can make their life a little easier by removing the barriers within our control – for example, by creating a Hedgehog Highway to help connect our gardens and create new spaces for hedgehogs.
If you have a garden there are small steps that you can take to make your garden a haven for our prickly friends, from putting out food and water in summer to making a hedgehog hibernation home.
One of the simplest things we can do is to link our gardens to create hedgehog superhighways. Making a 13×13 cm hole in garden fences these will allow hedgehogs to roam freely but be too small for most pets.
New planning laws now require a small hole to be put in the base of in all new housing developments, creating a high way for hedgehogs to roam freely.
